If you are looking for fact checking websites, links will be listed at the bottom of this page.
False or misattributed quotes are nothing new to the internet. Here at True Patriot, we have taken the time to try to ensure that each of the quotes we provide are accurate. However, it isn’t always possible to be 100% sure due to minor discrepancies or disputations in historical documentation, so on some of our quotes, you may see “basically” or “probably” next to the name of the quotee, which (given the context) is either a disputed quote with some sources pointing to it being true, a commonly accepted quote that is a paraphrase of the actual quote, or a quote obviously never stated by the given person but to comedic effect.
An example of this is the quote on our homepage: “The United States of America should have a foundation free from the influence of clergy.” – George Washington
A quick Google search of this quote turns up a “fact-checking” website, in which the article states that this quote is false. However, upon further digging, we find that the author of said article exudes extreme far-right bias, having been quoted as saying that blackface should be protected as free speech for example. So, while this quote has been labeled as “false” by this one “fact-checking” website, given the context of other quotes from George Washington, other founding fathers, and the Constitution, we’ve opted to keep this quote.
Below you’ll find a list of continually added additional quotes with context that we have found to either been disputed or paraphrased:
Lighthouses are more helpful than churches. – Benjamin Franklin
It is believed that the quote in question was actually, “Were I a Roman Catholic, perhaps I should on this occasion vow to build a chapel to some saint; but as I am not, if I were to vow at all, it should be to build a light-house.” Based off of other quotes from Benjamin Franklin, such as, “The way to see by Faith is to shut the Eye of Reason,” we’ve opted to keep this quote with the addendum of ‘(basically)’ attached to the end of the quote. There is not one redeeming feature in our superstition of Christianity. It has made one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites. – Thomas Jefferson
This is essentially a nicer paraphrasing of the actual quote, which is, “Is uniformity attainable? Millions of innocent men, women, and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined, imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites.” Due to the length of the original quote, we’ve opted to use the paraphrased version. While PolitiFact.com and Snopes.com are commonly known and referred fact checking sources, we have personally seen very questionable posts on some large topics, and therefore have decided against posting them here.
Additionally, there is never any true guarantee that a site can remain completely unbiased, and so it is important to crosscheck references and do some of your own research.
